The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
